INTUITION
After 20 years of practicing medicine, 25 years of marriage to my wonderful wife Cissy, raising four girls and a son I have learned that women at ALL ages are very intuitive. Women know their bodies and know immediately when something is changing while men can ignore, sometimes for lifetime, the obvious change or symptoms their body is screaming at them.
This female intuition I believe is tied to the main female hormone estrogen. Unfortunately, female intuition can become problematic when a woman tries to explain to her husband, others or her Doctor how she is feeling. This is because a woman is aware of how the change is affecting multiple systems in her body. Oftentimes she will communicate the change globally with statements like... I don't know why but I just don't feel right, I've never felt this before, it feels like I am going crazy, or it seems like.... Because these statements are not neatly defined in thirty seconds, fit an exact symptom or a concrete disease they are often viewed as an emotional crisis or a non-physical issue. The emotional expression then becomes what is treated rather than the underlying physiologic change that has caused the emotional communication in the first place. Is it any wonder that the procedure of removing a woman's uterus (hysterectomy) was named using the same root of the word hysterical.
The Everything Well Woman's Healthcare program emphasizes the following:
First: Women you are not crazy no matter how crazy it sounds, and you have to communicate 'what you are feeling' with the knowledge that there are physiologic reasons to why you feel the way you do.
Second: You must be able to tell your story in an environment that is hearing what you are really saying physiologically and won't write you off by simply addressing the manifestations of the underlying change in physiology.
We are spending this month acknowledging the gift of female intuition and shedding some light into the physiology behind the feelings. On average, a woman will spend approximately 20% of her life gearing up for hormones, 35% of her life with a hormone driven menstrual cycle and 45% of her life in menopause and waning hormones. While these seasons and transition times can be challenging, you as an individual have the most influence on what happens. Our goal is to equip and assist you for this journey.
As my colleague Eldred Taylor says, "it's time for all women of all ages to become honorary Gynecologists." That's good advise for all sons, husbands and men as well!
